The oppression that women have been faced with in the Western culture and the wrong perception that is present about women in Western culture and literature is unprecedented in the entire period of history. In the past, women were everywhere faced with oppression, but the current oppression which is universal, widespread and full-scale is specific to the recent times and is caused by the Western civilization. They have presented women as a means for men to indulge in and call it women’s freedom! While, in fact, this freedom was for dissolute men to seek pleasure in women not women’s freedom! They oppressed women not only in work sphere and industrial activities and alike, but also in arts and literature. Today, look at movies, novels, paintings and other artistic forms and see what the approach that they took toward women is; are those positive aspects and lofty values that exist in women being considered? Are those sensitive emotions, that kindness and kind temperament that God the Almighty has entrusted in women -maternal feelings and instinct to protect and grow a child- being considered? Or is it about those sexual aspects as they call it love? (It is a wrong term. It is called lust not love!) That is how they intended to educate and condition women: as a consumer – a spendthrift consumer and a cheap laborer with low expectations. Ayatollah Khamenei, 12/16/1992
